James Sollis, Craig Towle, Oliver Davies and captain Ross McCrickerd

Four Scouts from 1st Adderbury hiked ahead of all the opposition to win their section in the gruelling 33 mile Cyril Gardner Memorial Hike over the weekend of 27/28th March 1999. They are now proud owners of the Hiking International Trophy.

The Cyril Gardner Memorial Hike, which is organised by the Oxford Scout organisation, sees youngsters walking a testing cross country course, from Oxford, across Otmoor, through Piddington and Brill, across to Worminghall and back to Oxford. Entries are taken from local and visiting teams.

Whilst the weather was warm and sunny during the day conditions across some of the ploughed fields were difficult because of recent heavy rainfalls. Temperatures dropped to around freezing point after dark.

Out of 57 Scouts teams of four entering the competition, only 9 completed the course.

Adderbury’s team, team 21, set off at 12.06 on the Saturday lunchtime. Within three hours they had overtaken 18 of the teams who set off before them, and overtook the other two within the next three hours. Adderbury completed the 33 mile course at 10.58 on Saturday evening – an impressive course time of 10 hours and 52 minutes!

1st Adderbury were entered in the Cyril Gardner Hike’s novice section, for teams that have not participated in the competition before. In addition to their own section, 1st Adderbury performed so well they also won the Headington District Trophy for second place in the general competition, against many teams that have entered the competition several times before.

Scout Leader Andy Green was delighted with his Scouts’ performance. He said, "Our lads were really storming ahead and had great pleasure in telling me how many teams they had overtaken. By the half way point they were really feeling the pressure of walking such a long way, but were determined to finish the course. They were completely focused on achieving their goal."

"Simply completing a 33 mile walk is a major success in itself, but to bring home two trophies in addition to that is superb. What’s more, after the competition they were all still able to walk!"
